Exploring Adelaide's food hub

The Adelaide Central Market Tour is an hour of insider access to a place most visitors spend the morning circling without really understanding.

The market has been running for more than 150 years. It has more than 70 traders and has been voted the world’s third best food market. It’s considered one of the largest undercover fresh produce markets in the Southern Hemisphere.

We tell the stories of a place where Adelaide families have shopped on Saturday mornings for generations, where newly arrived migrant communities found the ingredients of home, and where the city’s food identity takes its clearest shape. Adelaide calls itself a food city – and this is why.

Walking through on your own is fine. But we think walking through with someone who grew up here is something else entirely!

Our guides are all born-and-bred Adelaide locals. They know which stalls have been operating longest, which traders have the best stories, and where to find the South Australian produce that doesn’t announce itself. You’ll taste your way through the tour, hear the history behind the market’s evolution, and leave with exclusive stallholder discounts and a full list of places visited.

We’re proud award winners: Gold at the 2025 South Australian Tourism Awards, Highly Commended at the 2025 Australian Tourism Awards, and Best Workshops and Talks at the 2026 Adelaide Fringe.

Itinerary

A glimpse of what's included

The Old Lolly Shop - the oldest remaining stall
We start at The Old Lolly Shop – the stall outlasting everything else in the market. It’s a natural place to begin the story of how the Adelaide Central Market came to exist, what it looked like when it started, and how it became what it is today
Kangaroo Island produce
Kangaroo Island produces some of the best food in South Australia. We stop to taste and talk about why provenance matters – and why South Australian produce gets the attention it does
International flavours
The Adelaide Central Market has always reflected the people who built this city. We stop at traders whose food tells that story directly – multicultural, unexpected, and genuinely good
Market history and layout
The market has changed significantly over its history. We walk you through what’s been lost, what’s been added, and what the current layout tells you about how Adelaide eats. By the time you leave, the market makes sense in a way it didn’t before

What you're probably wondering

Yes! It’s one of the best fresh food markets in Australia and the best window into how Adelaideans actually eat. It’s open Tuesday to Saturday and draws both locals and visitors for good reason. Even a short visit with a guide gives you far more than a full morning of solo wandering.

You can absolutely explore on your own. But a guide gets you past the surface. We know which stalls have been here for generations, which traders have the most compelling stories, and where to find the best local produce. You’ll understand more in one hour with us than most people piece together over several visits.

Without giving it all away, samples include a boiled lolly, empanada and cheese sample.

This is our way of sharing regional produce, international flavours and something from the market’s longest-standing stallholder. You’ll leave knowing exactly what to return to, with exclusive discount vouchers ready to be used. If your interest is already piqued, take a look at all of the market‘s stalls.

Yes. We cater for vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free requirements – just let us know when you book please! Get in touch if you have any questions before booking.

We do. Private tours suit groups of eight or more, corporate events, or anyone who’d rather have Adelaide to themselves. It costs a bit more for that flexibility; for up to 10 guests you can book that here. Or for large groups, get in touch so we can talk through what works for you.

The Iconic Adelaide Tour is a natural companion – three hours covering the city’s history, laneways, and landmarks in depth. It runs year-round and makes for a great full day out when combined with the market tour in the morning.

If you’re visiting between November and March, our Welcome to Adelaide tour also runs at 2pm during that period, making it easy to pair with the 9.30am market tour on the same day.
